Hello, I’m new here and new to PMU’s and Can. But ima old fart that’s been into cars for a long long time. I’m trying to really push my experience farther than I’m comfortable.

I thought I’d post a brief summery with what I’m looking to accomplish and make it easy to read/understand so if it’s something you’re not interested in you can click off before reading deep.

I have a Buick Regal 1987 (original T car) in excellent shape. I built a forged 408cuin LS with a 94mm Precision Turbo and built 4L80. I have the FuelTech FT600 (I know this is a ECU Master forum - hold on) I’m ready to purchase the ECUMaster PMU-16 DL and a Dakota Digital Dash RXT.

I’m trying to get everything to talk / play nicely.

I have done a ton of research (a lot) but again this is out of my comfort zone so I’m asking for any an all help.

Below is what I think is the best ways to make this happen if you are someone who is interested in something like this (I have been told by both FuelTech and Dakota Digital I can not make this happen) please read on

Using my research I asked AI to double check my theory and its first reply was incorrect.. I corrected the errors and asked it double double check everything I had come up with and this (yes it’s very long) is the answer it came up with.

If anyone is crazy enough to spend the time to read and you see anything wrong or a better work around PLEASE let an old guy hear from you.

LUMA’s REPLY:

I did double-check, and I apologize for the oversight in my previous response. Dakota Digital is correct: They do not have a native “BIM” (Bus Interface Module) or CAN profile specifically for FuelTech ECUs in their current configurator. Their BIMs are proprietary “bridges” that translate specific ECU CAN streams into the Dakota’s internal language. Without a FuelTech BIM, the Dakota RXT cannot natively “understand” the raw CAN messages coming from the FT600.

However, your intuition about a workaround is 100% correct. You do not need to run duplicate sensors. The ECUMaster PMU-16 is the perfect “middleman” to solve this.

Here is the verified, deep-dive solution to make the FT600, PMU-16, and Dakota RXT talk to each other without duplicate sensors.

**The Solution: The PMU-16 as a CAN Gateway**

Since the PMU-16 has a native FuelTech CAN profile(ECUMaster supports FuelTech directly) AND the Dakota RXT has a native Haltech CAN profile (which is often compatible with other generic CAN streams or can be tricked), we can use the PMU to translate the data.

There are two distinct paths to achieve this. Path A is the most reliable “Gateway” method. Path B is the “Haltech BIM” hack you heard about.

**Path A: The “PMU-16 as a Translator” (Recommended & Most Robust)**

In this scenario, the PMU-16 listens to the FuelTech, grabs the data, and rebroadcasts it in a format the Dakota _can_ read (likely mimicking a Haltech or generic CAN stream).

1. The Hardware Connection

- FT600 CAN ↔ PMU-16 CAN (Connected via CAN-H/CAN-L)

- PMU-16 CAN ↔ Dakota RXT CAN (Connected via CAN-H/CAN-L)

- Sensors: All engine sensors (Oil, Temp, etc.) go ONLYto the FT600.

2. The Configuration Logic

Step 1: Configure FT600 (The Source)

- Enable CAN Bus in FTManager.

- Set Baud Rate to 500 kbps (Standard).

- Ensure “Broadcast Engine Data” is ON. The FT600 will now shout RPM, Oil, Temp, etc., onto the CAN bus.

Step 2: Configure PMU-16 (The Translator)

- Input: In the ECUMaster software, enable the FuelTech CAN Profile. The PMU will now “hear” the FT600’s data.

- Mapping: You need to map the FT600’s CAN messages to the PMU’s internal variables.

- Output (The Trick): Now, you must configure the PMU to broadcast these variables out on its CAN port in a format the Dakota understands.

Step 3: Configure Dakota RXT (The Receiver)

- In the Dakota Configurator, select the Haltech BIM.

- Connect the Dakota CAN to the PMU CAN.

- The Dakota will now “think” it is talking to a Haltech ECU, but it is actually receiving data translated by the PMU from the FuelTech.

Pros: No duplicate sensors. Highly reliable. Cons:Requires advanced CAN ID mapping in the ECUMaster software (you need the Haltech CAN spec sheet).

**Path B: The “Haltech BIM” Hack (The Forum Suggestion)**

The forum suggestion you heard is likely referring to Path A, but phrased differently. Since Dakota doesn’t have a FuelTech BIM, but _does_ have a Haltech BIM, the trick is to make the FuelTech (or the PMU acting as a proxy) speak Haltech.

- Can the FT600 speak Haltech? Generally, No. The FT600 broadcasts its own proprietary FuelTech CAN format. It does not have a setting to “Switch to Haltech Mode.”

- Can the PMU-16 speak Haltech? Yes. The ECUMaster PMU software is very flexible. You can define custom CAN output messages.

Verification: I checked the ECUMaster PMU-16 documentation and community forums. The PMU-16 does support custom CAN message definition. You can define the CAN ID, the data length, and the scaling.

- _Requirement:_ You need the Haltech CAN Protocol Specification. This is a public document from Haltech that lists which CAN ID corresponds to RPM, Oil Pressure, etc.

- _Workflow:_

**Path C: The “Analog Backup” (The Fallback)**

If the CAN translation proves too complex (requiring deep CAN ID knowledge), you fall back to your original plan, but only for the gauges, not the engine control.

- Sensors: Install one set of sensors on the engine.

- Wiring:

Is this “Duplicate Sensors”? No, it’s Signal Splitting. You only have one sensor on the engine. You are just splitting the electrical signal to two destinations.

**My Recommendation for Your Build**

Given you have an LS6, 94mm Turbo, and 4L80E, reliability is key.

1. Try Path A (PMU Translation) First:

2. If Path A fails or is too complex:

**Summary of the “Truth”**

- Dakota is right: No native FuelTech BIM.

- Forum is right: You can use the Haltech BIM as a workaround.

- How: The PMU-16 acts as the translator, converting FuelTech CAN data into Haltech CAN data.

- Sensors: You do NOT need two sensors. You need one sensor, and the PMU (or signal splitting) handles the distribution.

Would you like me to try to find the specific Haltech CAN ID list for RPM and Oil Pressure so you can start configuring the PMU-16? That is the missing piece of the puzzle to make the “Haltech BIM” trick work.

Oh and I’ve been asked the same questions so:

Goal of car is a Drag&Drive /Toy mid 8sec

I do not want to run the FT600 as the dash-that’s why I wanna use the Dakota. I like a stock-ish look

I have so many sensors on the car it’s overkill for a basic fast street car. But I want to learn this stuff and it’s exciting to me right now

My goal was to try and do my first (milspec) enclosed custom harness. Only to push my ability and I think it’s sexy looking 🙂

Laugh at me now.. I singed up for HP Academy’s wiring corse and took them all to professional level. So not only am I YouTubed Certified I’m also HP Academy Certified and with them I have the diplomas to show🤪🤪

I’m just really interested in this and the build is going on 3 years now. The wiring is the only thing left then I’ll dyno and sort it out and probably tear it down to re-paint and refinish hi-level although the current car is as I said in excellent condition.

If I casually ask even experienced guys these questions I’m brushed off and that kinda feeds me to keep going the way I have. I’m not interested in buying a FT pro-harness that everyone says or an eBay this or that. I think I like the build more then driving..

thanks again

Kevin - I read a little, but have no patience to read LLM output. I am interested in your problem and maybe we can have a more focused conversation about what you’re trying to do here (overall).

I think you’re just trying to get a PMU + dash + FT all talking? This is a very tall order!

I couldn’t figure out if the a1 is telling you to put them on the same bus. If this is the case, make sure there is no collision of CAN id’s and that the bus speeds are the same.

Once you can verify that, I’d put everything on the bus and then make sure you can actually see messages whizzing by. I use a PCAN device to do that. I think ecumaster also has their equivalent and you can use their software to do the same (someone correct me if I’m wrong). Some kind of device to independently watch the bus is going to be a requirement, sorry, but more money to spend!

From there, it’s just a matter of translating. I can confirm that Haltech does publish their messages. I have written many translators for it.

(I LOVE G BODIES!)

Thanks for looking.. your correct the goal is to have all communicate. And because I’ve been told by FuelTech and Dakota Digital I can’t.. of course now I wanna try harder. At the same time I don’t really want to re-invent the wheel but I can for sure devote a week off an on to look into it.

At first I was going to just double up on the sensors the dash would need. I can get oil pressure and temp in more then one location on a LS and make sure the FuelTech’s sensors are priority and more accurate. The Dash is really just cosmetic to me. The FuelTech does have a speed output and a tach signal so that (in my mind solved this).

Currently I have a [Leash Electronic Street/Strip](https://www.leashelectronics.com/products/street-strip-wiring-board?pr_prod_strat=e5_desc&pr_rec_id=f69d5d1a9&pr_rec_pid=8310514123010&pr_ref_pid=9317451759874&pr_seq=uniform) relay and from the start of the build wanted to use a PDM/PMU.. I purchased the ECUMaster Battery Isolator and figured I’d pull the trigger on the PMU-16.

I asked a few questions on this forum and others and people told me there was a work around in getting the PMU to communicate with the FuelTech… and basically I could use the PMU as a “middle man” to make everything talk/play nice.

I asked AI and after a few updates it looks to be do-able. The post where I just copied AI’s recommendation was for everyones reference.

In a nut shell thats where I’m att.

This whole build has been me pushing what everyone has said either cant be or dont do. It’s just a hobby for me. The car is (its goal) is to do a Sick Week Drag&Drive event. I’d like to run in the 8’s and have real car features… Vintage Air, OverDrive, Whippers etc.

Using a PMU opens up so many more options and I’me very set of using the Leash relay on something else.

Ok, looks like you’re using this: [1984- 87 Buick Regal and Grand National RTX Instruments](https://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=1294/category_id=706/mode=prod/prd1294.htm)

I’m looking at the manual right now.
All you want is temp/pressure input from the FT ecu?

 ![image](https://europe1.discourse-cdn.com/flex013/uploads/ecumaster/original/2X/4/4fad70f32646b6f0bce4c2546910f8a43a45c206.png)
Right?

If we’re on the same page, then I’m not sure how a PMU is going to help unless you dive deep into making some conversion boxes. It looks like the Dakota dash doesn’t have any kind of CAN inputs.

The pressure sensor looks like a standard .5 to 4.5 linear sensor and the temp sensor is probably a standard NTC thermistor. I think the a1 was trying to convince you to use the CAN stream from the FT and use those values to ‘spoof’ these signals in a PMU.

If you lived next me, I’d be all over this challenge — Unfortunately, I think I’d just T the oil pressure tap and put the temp sensor in the opposite head port and move forward.

Am I missing anything?
