Is the EMU PRO software

is the EMU PRO software very bad and unfriendly structure to work with or its because im used to the emu classic and black software ?
it looks like i have to manually setup the whole GUI myself, maybe spend more time setting up channels on the screen that tuning the car itself…

I think it’s a bit of both, honestly. EMU PRO is different from Classic/Black, and switching over takes some time — especially if you’re used to the old interface. It’s actually a bit closer to ADU/PMU.

That said, PRO does bring real advantages:

  • Fully customizable tables — change axes independently, add rows, bins, and dimensions
  • Graph Log has more features
  • Project Tree — build custom tables, math channels, logical functions, and more
  • More diagnostic channels and flexible logging frequencies

More flexibility does mean more complexity. But other customers have told us it’s worth the adjustment period — once the initial setup is done, the flexibility pays off.

If you still see room for improvement after spending more time with it, we’d love to hear your thoughts. It helps us make the software better.

Would I give up even a bit of the EMU PRO’s flexibility for a better software experience? Absolutely not!

Improvements could be made to the client software

  • the way windows snap and stay adjusted seem a bit clunky (no specific examples)
  • the graphing zoom and pan take a bit of getting used to, seems every software on the planet has come up with different key-combos/controls to do this
  • custom tables should have a way to land on the main panel, it makes them feel less integrated having to dive into menus to get to any of them (… but I’m strongly in support of less built-in features and more CPU/Memory/channel limit capacity for custom setups)

I’d say compared to other ECUs on the market with 1500+ logged parameters, it actually feels pretty good. It’s half ECU and half PLC (like most modern OE ECUs), that’s an extremely challenging thing to get right on the client side.

Personally I find it very intuitive, it’s a lot less ‘fisher price’ than the V2 EMU Black GUI. I’d say make the the V2/ V3 more like the Pro.. that may also discourage more amateurs from trying to tune (we can dream…)

the end goal is not to make the GUI really bad so we kick out amateurs… Thats exactly NOT what we want to do xD
Also being an expert doesnt mean spending a week figuring out how bad the gui is xD

I also partially disagree with @Simon about trying to discourage anyone, but finding a middle ground is probably the best to hope for with something like the EMU Pro. Unfortunately it might feel complex enough to some that it ends up in a pretty niche part of the market, that is not really a good thing for any users at any level. The best case is that it fills a wide market and support stays strong and development keeps happening.

Since this is more of a casual discussion and not technical from the sound of it…

Most ECU software is free, don’t have to buy anything to figure out what flavor you’re into. If this is just an issue of matter of taste.

If you have technical requirements for your projects that back you into using product X Y Z and this is where you landed, the best thing to do is provide constructive non-confrontational feedback on improvements.

If you have clients bringing cars to you to tune and they have already setup the car for the ECU without you knowing and now you have to navigate an unfamiliar software, maybe ask them to set you up with some pre-defined tuning windows you think you’ll need the most and leave the rest up to them to figure out. I know this is really relying on them to know what they are doing but it’s probably workable.

Do you want ultimate flexibility or do you want super simple? You really can’t have both.

An unfriendly GUI is just an opinion.
GUI is subjective, so there is no single solution that works for everyone.

We can discuss GUI changes, but we need constructive criticism.

If you give us a specific example of a problem you have with the GUI, we can look for solutions. But saying you don’t like it and prefer an EMU Black GUI isn’t productive.

its not subjective, you count the clicks the effort and the obscure languange/text used in the software… When i opened ecumaster classic software almost 10 years ago it was instant love.
Similar with the king before ecumaster, DTA …

Ok,
Some things are subjective, and others are about productivity and efficiency.

So, what are your main problems with PRO GUI?

It’s much easier to make a GUI for accessing 1/10 of the features.

I don’t think you quite understand the scale of difference between these two product tiers. Just logged channel count is more than 10x over the previous generation! The EMU Pro exists in a tier of products that was maybe out of your reach 10 years ago. Nevertheless, can’t even reasonably compare the usability, versatility, and features of EMU Pro with the products that did exist in a similar space 10 years ago, it’s no contest!

I only wish that some effort would go into finishing this product out — at least as much as I see other things here. I know that a lot could be going on behind the scenes that I don’t know about. Not really a complaint, but I’m very excited for the future of this product.

I bought it (in large part) for precision analog inputs for some new stuff I wanted to try. Turns out they’re only usable for thermocouple (for now). I just thought it was more of finished product. I’d like to see little things like that finished up and vetted.

Thank you ECUMaster - I know you’re doing your best with what you have at hand :+1:

Answering about the Pro EMU software,
What i dont like is that it doesnt follow the V2 or V3 logic.
It uses the hidden style menu system like maxx and Haltech which i dont like. And adds more difficulty, explaining

Enabling a simple thing like e.x. Launch Control

  1. You have to first search and find on the left Tree Click ANd appear Tree Menu, among the mixed LOG windows and box values and evertyhing mixed together like a salad in the whole tree, once you open the whole tree and you find what you want hopefully while squinting your eyes (trying to catch something that is not logging values),
you click and you open aaaanddd there is not a single menu that pops up in the middle screen, its heavily gravitated towards having the functions/operations plastered on the Tree, e.x. Clicking on Launch control every choice is showing everything AGAIN, on the tree. This tree is doing all the heavy lifting here xD
  2. Then Doesnt accept one click on the tick box, needs Double click to first become red perimeter and then the tick box becomes from grey to white [ ]
  3. You click 3rd time, to tick the white box to [ v ] and then you 4th click go away it becomes a grey . So 4 clicks to just tick a box.
  4. suddenly boom a whole list appears with all the functions and options, where ? Yes again on the tree, not in a seperate Menu, which mixes with the rest of the open tree functions. And of course you loose orientation of what you were doing and where you were in the heavily loaded tree menu. With no distinctive borders or lines and small boxes because of all the functions loose in there everything is small and space stingy.
  5. Tables functions and values are integrated by default on the function tree, again… Tree is heavy lifting here.
  6. All the values and options and logging parameters for launch control are all there again like salad.
  7. To adjust one value you have to again 1) double click the whole option to make it red, 2) move your cursor to the box with the value, 3) click the tiny arrows (scroll wheel doesnt work) or click to enter the value.

For some reason all the functions and options of the whole ecu, is compacted in 1/10 of the GUI at the tree menu. And the Rest 9/10 of the GUI is logging, and channels like a god damn cable television xD
And its not like Graph logs and channels are in one place, its like the dizzy maxx ecu style Graph that changes position shape and optins by itself depending which micro menu you clicked last, each page has logging window and changes shape and place randomly.

So basically tuning and tables are hidden as much as possible while logging windows and channels are everywhere like a Coca Cola advertisements. If i cant find use or operate the tables easy what good is if i have a gazillion ready made boxes channels whole Log Graphs all at the same time.

TBH it looks more like a PRimary engine Bench Dyno Logging Software for use for 27"+ inch monitors, or double monitor even, for people that do really narrow range of cars.

Pro software does ΝΟΤ look like an In-Car tuning software for laptop and professional car-dyno tuners that have more variety

I’m sure ECU Masters will take you feedback in consideration, perhaps even elaborate. I don’t work for them or have any sponsorship or skin in the game here, just another rando customer like the rest.

I believe I can still comment on some of your suggestions because they are are heavily a matter of taste.

You have to first search and find on the left Tree Click ANd appear Tree Menu, among the mixed LOG windows and box values and evertyhing mixed together like a salad in the whole tree

Tables functions and values are integrated by default on the function tree, again… Tree is heavy lifting here.

All Settings = It’s everything! Every parameter and setting and table (besides the Tree items). I rather like your salad analogy, yes, like a big salad.
Some setups have VVT, some flex fuel, some boost, some this and that… It’s up to you to build the “main” screens out however you like. Every table in the tree can be broken out to a larger table on the main screen at your choice. Once you get the car running and dialed, setup a few main windows how you like. All the deeper parameters can be forgotten.

Then Doesnt accept one click on the tick box, needs Double click to first become red perimeter and then the tick box becomes from grey to white [ ]
You click 3rd time, to tick the white box to [ v ] and then you 4th click go away it becomes a grey . So 4 clicks to just tick a box.

I personally like the way the check boxes are, this isn’t something that should be messed with after the car is setup. I got the hang of this process of clicks very quickly and it has probably kept me from fat fingering something multiple times.

suddenly boom a whole list appears with all the functions and options, where ? Yes again on the tree, not in a seperate Menu, which mixes with the rest of the open tree functions. And of course you loose orientation of what you were doing and where you were in the heavily loaded tree menu. With no distinctive borders or lines and small boxes because of all the functions loose in there everything is small and space stingy.

I don’t necessarily have an issue with this. There are check boxes that enable “other” parameters by nature, tough thing to handle on the GUI besides just dumping it right below. The all settings menu doesn’t move in jarring way for me when these parameters show up, The project tree is another story, very jarring when changing things.

To adjust one value you have to again 1) double click the whole option to make it red, 2) move your cursor to the box with the value, 3) click the tiny arrows (scroll wheel doesnt work) or click to enter the value.

this is an interesting issue which I agree with partially, although somewhat used to at this point. There are two “value” type parameters in the all settings, number values, and table values. The table values are pretty straightforward. highlight them and + - [ ] all work as expected. The number values function like a check box, I don’t think these are really intended to be tuning parameters, things like vehicle speed correction isn’t something you want to be able to go into and willy nilly hit + or - and change. A change in one of those parameters needs to be intentional, not happen accidently, and shouldn’t be necessary once setup properly. I agree there is a bit of ambiguity around the difference between these two types of value inputs as I’m sure it’s an ever evolving thing based on specific requests of customers or whatever.

once you open the whole tree and you find what you want hopefully while squinting your eyes

as far as I know there isn’t a way to scale the font/sizing of everything, there wasn’t a way in the EMU black either. This would probably be a welcomed feature for some in both software’s but it’s not that straightforward to implement.

I suggest you spend more time with the software and see if it grows on you a bit. It seems a lot of your complains are a matter of taste??? How much time have you been using it at this point? It took me about a week to get really comfortable and now I can blaze through it and find whatever I need in a matter of seconds.

You can reverse that phrase towards your own preference as well.
But 1) quadruple clicking one box to enable, 2) sorting out through endless dubious tree lists mixed with log channels 3) stacking things on top of other things in 10% of the GUI space with no extra pop up windows to move around 4) Help information inexistent
5) trashing the whole V2 V3 architecture for a completely new one alienating growing current existing users
6) Looks more like Logging software rather than a tuning software
7) GUI is RAW yes, much customizable, but feels it was left incomplete not for good reasons. Take it or leave it FU style…

The first 6 observations are Οbjective
Matter of taste, sure, its Subjective, you may want to torture yourself with a 10.000 piece puzzle. But i want the tune as fast and as good as possible, i dont want to torture the car, and myself. V2 V3 is way more streamlined althought ecumaster black is already stuffed with functions for the price tier, and many people already struggle with the amount of stuff already as is…

I was thinking of going pro-8, i downloaded the software and i got really disappointed.
PS: Whats your main profession Billy_C ? i feel that Linux users or C++ or languange programmers will like Pro Software

So you haven’t set it up on a car yet? What are we doing here???
Yes, I have a deep programming skill set but because it’s the year 2026, not strictly because of professional requirements. There is no coding involved for the pro software so not sure how that applies.

I have played with some code programming suites they are usually quite chaotically open like the pro software

I would agree that it’s not really optimized for fast and efficient in-car changes. And focusing on some particular part of setup is not easy sometimes

Best ECU/software I know and own in that regard is Syvecs with no mouse needed at all and everything tied to keyboard shortcuts but the structures and visuals might get new or unprepared users a stroke. It really gets very comfortable over time and the in-car changes/loads/flashes are instant.
But that’s just another approach. Like VIM in the world of code editors.

I have personal cars with both and no problem switching between the two software-wise.

The black software, on the other hand, is really not my cup of tea. I bought one for a project a year and a half ago, tried with v3 and decided to upgrade to PRO8 within two days, GUI being part of the decision.

My GUI suggestions are

  • let me close the HELP panel with the same F1 shortcut to save space once not needed
  • maybe a way of disabling a channel on a graph so that the number is visible but it’s not drawn if I need to focus on some part without removing it and adding back
  • basic math operations on selected table cells (add, subtract, multiply etc)
  • change “equalize selection” command to something like “smooth (out)” to fit the effect

P.S Admittedly I used to work in software development on the frontend side so my perspective might be a bit skewed

It does feel unfinished, first it was DI, now with every brand rushing to get 8hp to market it seems that there might always be something keeping it from getting the final touch it deserves.

It’s especially tough because there are built in features that the black has that this doesn’t (yet), in order to replicate those features requires using up valuable user variables, of which there is limited qtys of. I’m already using half and at 87% memory capacity.

Since we are here, and this has become a pretty casual debate with a few constructive suggestions already sprinkled in a dumpster fire. Why were you considering the EMU PRO vs EMU Black vs other ecus on the market?

To me the reason was pretty simple…

totally customizable and nearly limitless CAN integration

Any vehicle built after 2008 and many before have loads of CAN messaging going to and from the factory ECU/DME/whatever-it’s-called, most other aftermarket ECU’s on market address this with a “wait until we figure it out” approach and even then it’s always a compromise. With enough CAN-sniffer tinkering, any factory ECU could probably be precisely replicated with the EMU Pro, with a few exceptions to certain very specialized features. The focus on adding DI was icing on the cake getting into the platform.
