MX5 Mk2 Hall Effect Crank Sensor

After suffering “unexpected missing tooth” errors on the crank sync I decided to rewire the rats nest of an engine harness. This was after changing the sensor and trying different gaps.
From the car’s wiring manual the crank and cam sensor are supplied with 12V, grounded on the engine and the signal goes to the ECU. While wiring the harness do I need to ground the sensors to the sensor ground on the ECU or is it just OK to ground as standard. Thanks.
