I would like to know whether my ECUMaster EMU Black can independently control a Bosch 82 mm DBW throttle body installed before the turbo as a ProSpool-style compressor-inlet throttle.
My setup is:
2JZ-GTE
ECUMaster EMU Black with Studio V3 software
Pulsar 7975G 79 mm turbo
TH400 transmission
E78 fuel
Single PSR 50 mm wastegate
Conventional manual engine throttle body 90mm
90 hp nitrous used during launch
Drag-racing application
The proposed airflow arrangement is:
Air filter → Bosch DBW throttle → turbo compressor inlet → intercooler → existing manual throttle body → engine
The current engine throttle body is mechanical/manual, not DBW. The Bosch unit would be used only as a separate pre-turbo throttle to control compressor-inlet airflow.
My main questions are:
Can the EMU Black control the Bosch DBW throttle independently?
Can it control the Bosch throttle from a dedicated launch-control strategy using RPM, time after launch, MAP/boost target or boost error?
Can the EMU Black use closed-loop MAP feedback to progressively open the pre-turbo throttle as the desired launch boost is reached?
Would this be a suitable strategy for my combination to build boost earlier during launch control?
Can the normal boost-control output continue controlling the single PSR 50 mm wastegate independently?
What safety strategies would be required to protect against DBW failure, compressor surge, excessive compressor-inlet vacuum or turbo overspeed?
My goal is to improve early boost response and reach the launch boost target more consistently while the engine is loaded against the TH400 converter. I am not trying to replace the manual engine throttle; the Bosch DBW would only be a pre-turbo compressor-inlet control valve.
Is this practical with the EMU Black, and would it be a sensible approach for this application?
This is interesting. But I have no idea how choking flow to the compressor inlet is going to help build boost. I can only imagine the surge problems you’re going to have too.
I’m just here to learn and listen basically. The world seem to be changing faster than I can keep up anymore. I’ll go google some of this stuff.
Today i was reading about this topic, but same i don t understand why before trubo inlet?
From my understanding this should be used in charge pipe in order to keep it open while building boost to maximise shaft rotation. After the Shaft speed will be reached trottle valve will close and all the pressure will be build and feed in to the engine.
Correction to my original post: I have since clarified that I was describing the ProSpool system incorrectly.
The Bosch DBW throttle would not be installed before the turbo compressor. The ProSpool arrangement used on the referenced cars is a post-turbo charge-air throttle, installed between the intercooler and the existing engine throttle body.
The vehicle has a conventional manual engine throttle body, so the Bosch unit would be a second, independently controlled throttle used only for boost control. It would not replace the driver-operated manual throttle.
My actual question remains however:
Can the ECUMaster EMU Black independently control a Bosch DBW throttle installed in the post-turbo charge pipe, without a conventional DBW accelerator pedal, using a strategy based on launch status, RPM, time, MAP or boost error?
I can’t forsure say it can do the DBW control you are looking for but I would assume so. So lets get some more experts to say how. but turbosmart does offer c02 and solenoid controlled boost gates specifically for this type of boost control if the DBW tb doesnt work.
i have consulted a few guys and they basically think that I will be wasting my time with this. : ). It’s just frustrating, i am trying to build boost on the line a bit faster as its taking forever to reach the desired boost level, so was just exploring the idea.
DBW is essentially the use of an H-brige with position feedback (analog in). As far as I can see this functionality is only supported in the BLACK for DBW, and for EWG control. It doesn’t allow functions or tables to send targets to the H-brige.
What you can do is connect your Post-IC-DBW to an H-bridge & analog input and configure it as an EWG. Run the EWG in open loop (no PID) and then you can fudge the “boost target1” and “Boost-duty cycle feedback” tables to force a certain Post-IC-DBW opening as function of rpm, tps, … Maybe you can even do things with timer to change “boost target”, and thereby impact Post-IC-DBW opening.
This does however mean that you loose closed loop (PID) pneumatic boost control. You can’t run EWG and PWG PID control simultaneously. You can however still control your PWG open loop via a PWM table.
It is a pretty poor implementation of the Post-IC-DBW you are requesting. But the best (I think) can be done with the current software.
