Ecumaster software crashes/not responding while running engine

Hello, i am building a Porsche 924 with an Ecumaster Classic.

I can connect the PC, set the ignition and outputs and so on, everything works fine until i start the enginge. The Program starts to lag, the plots stop and after a few seconds it shows (not responding) in the Title. Even the mouse is laggy. I tried 3 different Laptops with and without charging cable attached.

Until now i could live with that because i just changed ignition maps with engine off, but now i am assembling the fuel stuff and have to live view the lambda sensor and so on, so i cant continue at this point.

Does anybody know something about this? (I installed the Emu classic Software and the USB Driver)

You have interference from the ignition system.

What spark plugs do you use?
You should use spark plugs with built-in resistors.
Otherwise, you need a very good harness design for EMI.

Also, don’t run the USB cable together with the engine harness. If you have it like that right now, move the cable as far away as possible.

Hi, thanks for the quick answer, i use 4 VW COPs, i assume they dont emit much EMI back through the inputs since they are original parts used in ‘modern’ cars. In the moment the USB cable lies next to the main harness for a length of 60cm, thtas not optimal i guess (it goes inside the car). But earlier i had the PC standing on a table next to the car, so the cable went straight away from everything, still the connection was laggy.

Does it help to put the USB cable into some kind of Metal tube/pipe?
I don’t even have the primary trigger shielded but until now there aren’t any problems whith this.

The coils are ok, but I asked about spark plugs.

Can you show us the exact model of spark plugs you use?

It think it is the NGK BP 7 ES

Ok. Those are spark plugs without resistor.
Usually, spark plugs with built-in resistors have the letter “R” in the name.

Switch to BPR7ES.
It’s the same spark plug but with the resistor.
All your noise problems will go away.

well that would be great, thanks! Ill try it!

Hi I am using BCR8ES Plugs, R8 Red top COP’s, Shielded wire on both triggers and my USB cable is no where near the wiring harness, yet I am facing a lot of issues with the software freezing/ not responding/ crashing. I have tried other computers, rebooting the laptop’s and EMU but to no avail, therefor i am unable to set anything up or log anything with the engine running

  1. Do you have both grounds from the coil connected directly to the cylinder head?

  2. Did you try different USB cables?

Yes. The grounds are connected to the cylinder head. The intake manifold and gearbox are grounded to the body as well. Currently I am using the USB cable that came with the ECU

Any Suggestions on this

The new sparkplugs (BPR7ES) just arrived, but i cant test them until the fuel System ist ready, i have to finish some adapters and i am waiting for a milled fuel distributor.

I will post the Results with the pc connection, but it could take 2-3 weeks.

Try a different USB cable if you never did that.
It’s possible that the new cable has some fault.

Hi, I just tried a new USB cable to no avail. It still keeps freezing, i need to keep unplugging the USB and restart the software to make it function a little bit and then it freezes again

Ok, in that case, we need more details.

What’s the history of the vehicle?
Was it running correctly before?
Or is this an issue from the first power-up?

To find a solution, we need to confirm the noise source.
Disconnect the injectors/fuel pump, crank the engine with the coils firing, and check if the software freezes. If it does, disconnect the ignition coils and do it again. If there are no freezes after that, you have confirmed it’s an issue with the ignition system (the most likely culprit).

One of the coils may be faulty and generate excessive noise. If you confirm it’s an issue with the ignition system, you can disconnect a single coil and see if it helps. Repeat for all the coils to check if they are working correctly.

I have been running this car on a Link G4 ECU earlier and have never had an issue. The sensors, coils, injectors are all the same and nothing has been changed. I removed the Link and installed the emu Black for integration with the CAN TCU.

I have had this issue from the first start itself.

Will check as suggested by you and revert

What about the wiring harness?

OEM with Link adapter later swapped to EMU adapter?
Or is the custom harness for Link later modified for EMU?

Now, this looks to me like an incorrect/incomplete ECU ground connection.

No not OEM. This is a 2jz swap into a w201. I never adapt harnesses. Brand new harness with all points grounded. Unless you are suggesting not to use common grounding points wherein ECU ground and Power Ground are grounded and different points
