VVT on Subaru FB25?

Hello all. I have a VW T25 with a Subaru FB25 series engine installed, with an EMU Black 2.169. I have enjoyed tuning and tweaking with the software over the last couple of years, learning a lot and have it running pretty nicely. The company that installed my engine (Coast VW in Devon, UK) never got the VVT running on this engine and last I heard, they said that the new tuner they are using had tried but hadn’t been able to get it working with the EMU Black. I am not a professional but would like to know whether if I took it to my local Subaru tuners, they could get the VVT set up. There appeared to be some issue that was preventing it working. Can anyone confirm if it has worked on this engine? It seems a shame not to utilise this feature of the engine and gain some efficiency/performance benefits. Any support/advice would be great. I can’t find any reference or leads on this online. :+1: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Four-cylinder naturally aspirated Subaru engines are not a common choice for us, so we have less experience, but their trigger pattern and VVT control appear to match the EJ series. In theory the VVT will work, the challenge is the hardware limit on cam inputs:

• This engine has variable timing on both intake and exhaust cams (four sensors in total), which requires four digital inputs for closed-loop control.
• EMU Black and EMU Classic support only two cam-position inputs, so they cannot manage all four cams at once.

You therefore have to choose which pair to control:

• Most tuners focus on the intake cams because they yield the greatest efficiency and torque gains.
• The exhaust cams can still be driven in simple on/off mode via a parametric output, but you will not have closed-loop accuracy.

Best regards,

Hi Artur, Thanks for your helpful reply. That makes sense and explains the limitation. Would the best solution ultimately to be to upgrade it to EMU Pro to provide the additional inputs? It this a complete re-wire and can the software profile be imported in some way? I can also explore the intake cam route.

Thank you

contact us on ecumaster UK we do have adaptor from black to pro . otherwise is rewire job.
