Ahhh! Please help me! 2JZGE N-AT 1996 SC300

Hello guys!

My dad and I are having a lot of trouble on tuning my project car. We seriously couldn’t get the thing to start up or sputter at all. The most we got were some backfires and halfhearted chugs every now and then when we had it running with batch all injectors. But anything else? Nada.

I was hoping anyone here has any experience or input to get this thing running. Its so close to running I can practically smell it! (Literally the whole garage full of gas smell)
Dad and I are going solely off of our own knowledge, forums, and manuals but no luck

What injector phase would be needed?

Any help is appreciated!!!

Important things to note:

We get test outputs for all injectors, and only coil 1,2,3 but not 4,5,6 (is that normal?)

I have the 36-2 crank gear but one of the crank position sensor wires are shorted so we’re running the primary trigger on the dizzy gear instead.
Is 24 teeth the correct setting on the primary trigger for that gear, we counted 24teeth but on scope we only get 24 ticks instead of 48 between cam signals (is that also normal?), however I do have base timing set on 10deg BTDC

Its a 1996 SC300 with:

  • 2JZGE NON-VVTI
  • Distributor to VVTI wasted spark coils
  • CX-RACING turbo kit on it
  • Walbro 450 fuel pump (not installed yet)
  • Stock 1996 2JZGE injectors
    Thanks everyone!!!

I can’t attach files just yet because I am a new user but I’ll do my best to describe anything to anyone until I can and provide these links below

Photos did not work; lets just get your post count up so you can post the whole log and tune files.

VVTI JZ’s are all waste spark, so yes only the 1,2,3 ignition outputs are connected to anything.
I am assuming you’re using a PNP adapter of some kind?

I’d strongly recommend getting the crank trigger wiring/sensor sorted as it’s much better. without seeing trigger or scope settings, my hunch is that it’s probably timing you’re struggling with, or too much fuel.
step on the throttle to 100%, provided the setting hasn’t been changed this acts as a de-flood and is the easiest way to figure out if you don’t have enough fuel or have too much.

Aw dang, but hey thanks for coming by to help out! Yeah i have the PnP adapter for my emu classic.

I think timing should be all good as far as i can tell, i had a feeling it could be fuel issues.

Ill definitely try de-flooding when i get the chance to and seeing if i can find where my crank sensor wire is getting shorted.

Can i floor the throttle when the car is off or i do i needa do it when the key is in the on position?

ECU needs power for that feature, you can do it mid cranking.

its usually under the cranking tab, Engine start > fuel TPS scale. you can actively watch the value change

You can also watch the injector pulsewidth change as you do it.

Here is the Ecumaster USA first start checklist, just in case you haven’t found this yet

I’d go through this step by step, should get you fired up. Make sure the base map matches your engine info and since you’ve deviated from the original trigger system (again depends on what basemap used) I’d confirm the timing is correct with a timing light. I do that every engine I fire up regardless of how confident I am in the trigger settings.

Hey! Thanks for the reply again, yeah ive been using that first start checklist up to the part where it just tells me to crank it up and play around with fuel.

As for timing, timing seems to be on point when using the timing light since it hits 10degrees before TDC

Ill attempt that when i have the time and ill he sure to show you my files and logs as soon as i get the chance to.

Also as a side question, would you happen to know the injector phase and ignition event stuff when it comes to using the vvti coils/the distributor gear? Obviously its a bit hard to describe without images for now so no worries if you dont have any info on that at the moment

This is with the timing locked in the ecu at 10*?

This is the coils and injector phase from the supplied basemap for a JZ with waste spark and sequential injection, it is still accurate with the distributor. This is about the engine’s firing order, which doesn’t change regardless of where you’re getting engine position from.

do your trigger settings look something like this? does the engine synchronize and stay synchronized under cranking?

Hello again, okay so it is supposed to be 12 teeth? I had 24 teeth marked instead but other than that my settings look just about the same, I’ll try it out with 12 teeth and redo my timing using my timing light. I feel that may just be the biggest culprit, I will update you as soon as I try cranking it with adjusted timing on it.

And yes it does synchronise

ok so that’s likely the issue then. lol which I think I would have caught right away if the forum allowed you to upload or link a calibration and log… they should figure out a fix for that

so with a multitooth trigger, there’s no specifying where the trigger is. some other settings can state “missing tooth on cam” which is different then on the crank.
Cam spins at half crank speed, so each crankshaft revolution is 12 teeth on a 24 tooth wheel driven by the camshaft. The single tooth only needs to happen once a cycle to give the ECU a reference point (literally starts counting teeth until it sees the 1 tooth (home signal) again, and since it’s on the Cam it can tell it what phase the engine is in (compression or exhaust stroke.

What’s most likely happening is the ecu is hitting synch but misunderstanding engine position, because it’s waste spark it gets lucky occasionally and makes pop or gurgle.
Check with a timing light again yes, good practice when altering timing settings.

Ohhh okay this is great information thank you so much for all your help with this. I think I should be able to get a good base timing by possibly Saturday and will for sure get back to you if i am successful. My dad and i were super confused on how many teeth we were supposed to put down in the primary since we counted 24 on the distributor but the scope was only showing 24 ticks between each secondary cam tick. So it actually being 12 makes much more complete sense.

Hello!! I have an update, the engine is officially starting up, however we dont have an idle here is what my graph is showing (hope the picture works)

picture works!

which hopefully means you have enough posts now to upload the tune and datalog

Does the engine have an idle air control valve on it? Very common for those JZ one’s to seize in my experience

Okay yeah i found it, I have the crossover intake, how would i unseize it

First i’d figure out if it’s seized.
Let’s see your map and log.
If you remove it you can see it move when the ecu first turns on, but there’s other signs that’ll show in the map and log.

Im seeing what seems to be a loose wire on my IACV connector and an open vacuum. im gonna try getting that to sit properly first/plug the vacuum and then update you on that as well

Well it still wont let me upload attachments but maybe I can at least give you an image of my file and log, give me a moment

Its only letting me put one image at a time so sorry in advance for the message spam LOL

I think is to lean and check afterstart enrichment
