considering we have very little data space to work with I was wondering is there is a best practice for images as in filetype, sizing, ppi, etc.

Our platform has a limited memory size for picture and icon files, especially in .png and .gif formats. It takes a bit of work to get these files optimized.
The main thing to watch is the image size and format. You can tweak these in the “Add Custom Texture” area.
Remember, there’s always a give-and-take between image quality and file size. So you’ll need to play around with the settings a bit to find what works best for you.
